When you’re deciding which transfer bench you’ll choose, you’ll most likely be stuck between plastic and wooden shower bench. Since this are two quite different materials, I wanted to point out benefits of both materials.
In this article I’ll cover which material is safer, sturdier and more affordable. Since they cost a lot, it’s important that you make best decision. So read the whole article, you might be surprised of the results.
Which one is safer?
When I take about safety, I’m mainly talking about health safety. It’s well known that bacterias and funguses like some materials more than other. Since bathrooms are almost always damp and wet, bacterias and funguses are to very likely to develop on your shower bench.
That’s why it’s important that you choose a material that doesn’t allow bacteria to develop. Plastic chairs are not that problematic because bacterias don’t really like to grow on it. But when it comes to the wood it’s a different story, since bacteria and fungus really like to grow on wood, especially in a damp environment.
But if you would prefer wooden shower bench, then I would suggest you that you choose teak wood shower bench. Teak is a wood that performs great in damp environment and is bacteria and fungus resistant. And that makes teak perfect wood for wooden shower bench.
Which one is sturdier?
Since we gonna spend a lot of time on that chair, it’s pretty important that it’s sturdy. Plastic chairs usually have aluminum legs, which can be quite strong. But the problematic part is plastic. Plastic can take a lot of od abuse, but over time it becomes brittle.
Wood is much stronger and can have a much longer lifespan. Just make sure that you buy a chair that is sturdy enough and made especially for showering. Taking ordinary wooden chair is not a good idea because it’s not made for the wet and damp environment and it wouldn’t last very long.
Plastic vs. wooden shower bench price
Let’s face it, it almost always comes down to price when we make the final choice. Plastic chairs are much more affordable and can easily cost half of the good wooden shower chair.
However, you should also conside the lifespan of the chair. Quality wooden shower bench can cost almost twice as much as plastic one, but can last almost three time longer. If ou do a calculation, you’ll see that wooden one can cost less per year of use.
